Fashion Design and Technology Undergraduate Program

(in collaboration with London College of Fashion)


Combining creative and visual skills with technology, this program includes all fashion design processes from inspiration to collection.

PROGRAM LANGUAGE

Turkish (Foreign national participants must obtain a minimum intermediate level certificate of competence in Turkish from an educational institution certified by Ministry of National Education.)

Fashion Design and Technology Undergraduate Program is conducted in cooperation with University of the Arts London / London College of Fashion (LCF). It is a 3-year program that comprehensively addresses all processes of fashion design from inspiration to creating collection. Students receiving training at İMA in the first 2 years may continue receiving training either at LCF or İMA based on their qualifications and preferences.

UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON / LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION ACCREDITATION

Students who wish to complete their education at University of the Arts London / London College of Fashion by going to London from the 2nd or 3rd year of their education must meet the criteria under accreditation.

Accreditation Criteria:

Students who wish to continue at London College of Fashion from the 2nd year must have received 6 points from IELTS or an equivalent foreign language exam,

Students who wish to continue at London College of Fashion from the 3rd year must have received 6.5 or 7 points from IELTS or an equivalent foreign language exam,

Grade point average for 2 years spent at İstanbul Fashion  Academy must be minimum 70 out of hundred.

Students who apply in line with accreditation criteria are admitted based on the results of evaluations made by LCF.

  • have learned design development and manufacturing principles in the area of women’s and men’s wear, have improved your decision making and interdisciplinary working skills.
  • have the ability and technical skills to follow a contemporary, creative and professional approach and create your design identity.
  • participate in international projects and contests and prepare for international markets.
  • have made field visits and become closely acquainted with the industry.
  • have performed projects with famous fashion designers, find the opportunity to work with prominent brands in the industry.
  • have prepared your own mini collection for famous fashion brands.
  • have learned real world practices at the seminars that you will participate regularly from professional speakers in the area of fashion.
  • have worked in secondary areas of fashion and followed the developments of these areas in the industry.

People who are at least high school graduates, interested in fashion and wish to prepare for a professional career in fashion design, specialize in women’s or men’s wear design and become a Fashion Designer may apply for this program.

  • Fashion Designer

Participants are selected through interviewing and talent exam. Talent exam is given in order to measure the skills and abilities of participants. Having, if any, examples of previous works and portfolios with them during interviews would be helpful for participants to express and introduce themselves more comfortably in visual terms.

With talent exam, perception and visual ability of a student is tested. To that end, every school may apply different methods every year.

1st STAGE - Drawing Test and General Knowledge; tests drawing ability and general knowledge of student candidates.

2nd STAGE - Portfolio interview; held orally regarding presentation file prepared with artistic knowledge and applications. Candidates are admitted to the exam one by one. (**Does not necessarily have fashion design content.) Candidates should come to interview with a presentation file about the particular branch of art they are interested in or their competences.

The exam and interview are held at İstanbul Fashion Academy.
Student candidates who succeed in both stages are provided feedback to complete their enrolment process in Fashion Design and Technology Undergraduate Program.

Discovering young talents, offering them a bright future, supporting them on their way and bringing young people talented in design area into the industry take an important place in corporate culture of İstanbul Fashion Academy. Scholarship opportunities are the most important element of this support to young people.

Applicants filing for scholarship are given an applied exam and interview. Portfolios, sketchbooks and all visual knowledge of candidates submitted in accordance with the program applied are evaluated by “Scholarship Committee”. Students who are found eligible and meet the scholarship criteria are granted scholarship.

  • To be at least a high school graduate
  • To bring a file comprising portfolio and examples of works
  • Scholarship application form to be obtained from İMA and to fill in the application form correctly and in full

Pattern Cutting and Modelling in Fashion Design

Candidates who wish to take advantage of scholarship must apply in person to İMA and necessary interviews with them are also made at İMA.

PROGRAM CONTENT

In the first year, students receive lessons on all technical skills and applications that will improve their fashion knowledge providing background for design and that support creative process. Trainings are supported by watching İstanbul Fashion Week parades, guest speakers from the industry, field and museum visits.

Vocational English

In the second year, students perform design projects by which they can apply technical skills they gained in the first year. They develop advanced level application techniques with these projects and learn interpreting an industry brief. They prepare their projects in line with a brief given by a company from the industry. At the end of this project, students deemed eligible by the company are provided with the opportunity to be placed in internship.

In the third year, students complete their first personal collections with their “Final Projects”.
Students preparing a portfolio whereby all works done for three years are presented prepare themselves for the industry with these projects and portfolios they formed. Final collections of students are displayed at İMA Graduation Exhibition held at the year end and final collections selected by a jury of industry professionals take part in NEW GEN parade during İstanbul Fashion Week.
